The Challenge

The South West Coastal Path Relay Challenge is a continuous 630-mile relay of the South West Coast Path, split into 68 legs and undertaken day and night from 16 to 23 May 2026. Each leg will be completed by a team, with responsibility passed on at designated handover points along the route.

The path is traditionally completed anti-clockwise. We will travel in the opposite direction, beginning at Studland at 8am on 16 May and finishing at Bossington around noon on 23 May. The timings shown on the route page are estimated and will inevitably shift as the week unfolds. Live updates will be provided on the website, and we ask teams to remain flexible as coastal terrain, weather and fatigue may influence progress.

The challenge is being undertaken in memory of Cdr Amy Gilmore MBE. Amy had planned a sabbatical to complete the South West Coast Path herself, raising money for charity following the loss of her father shortly before she was diagnosed with cancer. During her treatment she found comfort and strength in walking sections of the path with friends and family. Although she did not have the opportunity to complete it, this relay carries forward that intention.

Amy’s walking sticks will act as the baton, passed from one team to the next at each handover. Teams should arrive at their allocated location ready to begin at the estimated time, unless they are completing consecutive legs and continuing onward themselves.

Team leaders can register their chosen leg or legs via the website, with full team member details submitted afterwards through the confirmation link provided. Participants are expected to be self-sufficient, bringing their own food, water and essential kit. A suggested kit list will be issued by the organisers. Support vehicles and crew will operate along parts of the route where possible, but this cannot be guaranteed, and teams should plan their leg accordingly.

If a leg is already allocated, we still encourage involvement. You may contact us and we will pass your details to the assigned team, or you are welcome to attend a handover point and walk alongside participants. The event is open to all, and we hope as many people as possible will take part in whatever way they can.
